Chapter 13

Capital of the Coronate

A cozy old restaurant

“WILL THEY PUNISH US?” Grandpa asked his best and only friend.

“No... The shame is enough!” Boerbolis groaned hopelessly and tossed back a full glass of the amber liquid that gave him joy in this world.

“Ri-i-ight...” the man drawled drunkenly, known to all as Grandpa, sometimes preceded by other adjectives.

However, he shared his friend’s mood. The two of them had been given a mission of truly trifling difficulty. An ordinary object of art that had to be returned to the homeland, and the hell with the fact that its homeland might not be the Empire at all. The Imperials had only one homeland, and since Galaxius had clearly said it was to be brought to the homeland, that meant the Empire.

And how had it all turned out? They turned away for a second to listen to a pop singer who wanted to amaze the incomers and onlookers who stopped to listen to him. And they didn’t even have time to punch him! They turned around, and the suitcase was gone! And most importantly, neither of them even sensed a thing. That event had saved the pop singer, actually. He didn’t get a punching that day. True, they came back the next day, but still. His own fault for preventing them from examining the scene of the crime again with his awful excuse for singing.

“I ju-u-u-ust don’t get it...” Boerbolis said, grabbing his head again for the umpteenth time. “It ju-u-u-ust ca-a-a-an’t be... You know? Not a single... hic... trace!”

The fancy dresser really had been suffering, and now he tried to pour his soul out to his friendly.

“I... hic..! I know what you mean...” Drunk Grandpa said, nodding. He was no fool himself, but still just as lost as his friend.

“Yes, hell of a... burp... puzzle...”

Much alcohol had been drunk over these conversations, but they weren’t goofing off — this time they were obeying Alexander’s instructions. He had told them clearly — if they didn’t have that stone, then the hell with them... Let them drink... Maybe the Frogs would give it back just to make them leave.

“Hey, what if that guy stole it..? Uh, whatshisface... the Corona! Could he have nabbed it? Such perversions are in fashion here, I... hic... think.”

Drunk Grandpa stared into space for a moment as if remembering something.

“Could be!” he uttered with a firm nod. “They might even have wanted us to...”

But he didn’t finish saying what they might have wanted.

“Hey, hobos! Enough noise, get out of here!” a voice from a distant corner of the room said, followed by roaring laughter.

In that same corner were some tables for a banquet. There people sat at the tables and drank champagne. And they weren’t just any old people of the Coronate. Many knew the Free Legion as excellent mercenaries, who had grown from a small squad in a few short years and gained a reputation as glorious fighters.

Boerbolis and Grandpa said nothing to them, didn’t so much as look their way. They had other things on their minds.
